Joe Nichols at Prospectors this Saturday night

Joe Nichols, Cape May 2002

Joe Nichols is playing Prospectors this Saturday, Jan. 31. It's the rescheduled date and I heard through the grapevine that it's sold out. Good thing I got my ticket last weekend while I was there dancing!

It must have been the summer of 2002 when Ken & Debbie still hosted the free line dancing at the convention hall in Cape May on Fridays. I was working as a cocktail waitress and it was dead one Friday night... so I left (in my restaurant polo & black pants) to go dancing. I remember walking in to see two guys on stage, one playing the guitar, one singing. I didn't know who they were but they were good! I was slightly confused because I thought I had left work to line dance. Turns out that I'd left work for a free concert. They had begun playing Impossible when I realized who was playing... groovy surprise!

The surprise free Joe Nichols concert was a prize Joe & Mary won on the radio - 107.3 had a contest for the best answer to the question, "Why should Joe Nichols play at your event" and Joe's event (line dancing [holla]) won. Long story, that was the last time I saw him live.

And we got to meet him...( I didn't realize the shutter speed was set to 60 until the pics were developed, I've got a true appreciation for digital photography)

Joe Nichols, Cape May 2002
I'm stoked! Since that show in Cape May, Joe has come out with Size Matters, Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off, I'll Wait for You, Brokenheartsville, She Only Smokes When She Drinks, Cool to Be a Fool, If Nobody Believed in You, & What's a Guy Gotta Do.

NJ line dances - current & nostalgic dances

After 11 years of line dancing in South Jersey, I've learned quite a few dances. I thought it would be useful to make a regional list of the dances I've both learned and seen in NJ. It should help anyone looking to learn a few dances that are done in the area. You can look up line dances - and find TMI! There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of line dances you can learn but where is the fun if no one else is doing them where you go?

Note: Adding the steps & videos takes quite a bit of time so here is my line dance list in progress. I'll republish it as I add links to new step sheets with videos. Feedback is welcome!

I did my best to make this all inclusive but please let me know if I missed any.

Cape May line dancing doesn't look too likely this summer

From the Cape May Gazette...

"With two repair estimates coming in at more than $300,000, Cape May City Council will not repair Convention Hall for use this summer, it was decided at a workshop meeting Tuesday, May 6."

http://cmnews.shorenewsnow.com/2008/05/06/convention-hall-will-stay-closed-for-the-summer.aspx

Not good news! It doesn't look like there will be any dancing at Convention Hall this summer :*(
Go figure... the summer that gas prices are expected to hit 4 bucks a gallon. My favorite free summer line dancing destination on the beach less than a gallon of gas away from home is no more... at least for a while.

I am going to sulk and think of more reasons I Love Country Boys... that'll cheer me up!

Cape May line dancing isn't looking so likely tomorrow night

I just heard some bad news about the Cape May Convention Hall. I just saw the post, "Convention Hall closed for structural worries" on the Cape May Gazette's breaking news. That must mean that the last dance of the spring will probably be canceled for tomorrow night.
I hope the Convention Hall reopens by June 27 when the free line dancing is scheduled to begin! I bet there are lots of Jazz Festival goers who are hoping it reopens by April 18 too. The jazz fest is a pretty big deal in Cape May.

Line dancing in other places in south jersey are still happening! Of course, there is still line dancing at the Scullville Fire House. Also, Debbie is going to be teaching a 6 week beginner line dancing class evenings at Ocean City High School. I'll try to find out the details but you can find out more information by calling Ocean City High School.

Wednesday in Scullville at the fire house, we got a nice surprise! Ken's sister sang Patsy Cline's "Crazy" for us. That was followed by a duet of Ken & his sister singing Kenny Roger's "The Gambler". They were both excellent! Can you beat line dancing and free surprise entertainment? I think not!

When you go dancing in Scullville, they give you a ticket at the door. Ken & Debbie do a drawing for a free pass. I've been going dancing for 10 years and I've won about 3 free passes until two weeks ago. Two weeks in a row I won a free pass. It was great! I feel lucky! I think I need to break out my old Mary Chapin Carpenter cd and listen to that song!

Anyway, sorry to be the bearer of bad news about line dancing tomorrow night in Cape May. There are country back-up plans in the area though...
If you are into Eric Church , he's performing at Prospector's. The tickets are $25 at the door and $20 ahead of time. He's the guy that sings "Two Pink Lines", "How 'Bout You", and "Sinners Like Me". He's pretty good! My favorite part of seeing shows at Prospector's is that you usually get to meet the artist & take a photo with them... and there's line dancing! Holla!

Well, I'll continue to pass on any information I hear about Cape May Convention Hall.

Another great night of dancing in Cape May

There were quite a few new people from children to twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings and forty-somethings and fifty-somethings and sixty-somethings, okay, you get the picture... it was a great crowd and still plenty of room to dance. Debbie taught the Dutchess Hustle out front for the new dancers and she reviewed Moonlight Salsa from last week out on the floor. There are quite a few new and easy dances that she's been teaching that are pretty fun... Cowgirl Twist, Jukin', Buck Wild Stomp for line dancers & Buckwild Stomp for Couples.
We always do plenty of classics like Trashy Women (Horsin' Around), 38 Step, Watermelon Crawl, and Tush Push. Last night we also did one of my all time favorites, Swamp Thang. I especially like to do that dance in Cape May because there is so much room on the dance floor (lotsa space to add extra spins). And Dizzy... can't forget that one too!
It's going to be a long 3 weeks before the next dance at the Cape May Convention Hall on March 7th... but it won't be too bad because I'll still head out to the Scullville Fire House on Wednesday night & maybe up to Prospector's on Friday night. I think the Dixie Chicks said it best, "Some days you've gotta dance!"

Dancing tonight... but not for me

So it's already Saturday night... which means another night of line dancing in Cape May. The last 3 weeks have been fun & the great part about dancing down there is that there's plenty of space to dance! The convention center has such a giant hardwood floor, it blows any NJ bar out of the water.
trace adkinsI'm going to be going through a little dancing withdraw because I can't make it tonight... my coworker won Trace Adkins tickets for tonight in Atlantic City and we are going to be meeting this Dangerous Man... Anyway, we get to meet him. Trace is her McDreamy or McSteamy, her George Clooney, her 'the One!'. I'm so excited for her to meet him tonight! It's great - and to make it even better, it's her birthday weekend... Happy Birthday Caroline! Despite the dance less weekend - it's gonna be a great one :D
